Sporting Equipment

Oversized fees are waived for approved sporting equipment up to 115 linear inches (292 cm), flying at standard checked bag rates ($35 online / $40 airport). Covered gear includes golf bags, skis, snowboards, surfboards, paddleboards, and non-motorized bicycles under 50 lbs (23 kg). Bicycles must be packed in a hard-sided case or cardboard box. Overweight gear incurs tiered surcharges ($30 for 50–53 lbs / $100 for 53–70 lbs / $200 for 70–100 lbs). If an item is both oversized and overweight, American charges only the single higher fee. Pole vaults, javelins, and hang gliders are not accepted.

Valuable & Fragile Electronics

Laptops, cameras, and drones must travel in cabin carry-on allocations. Loose lithium-ion batteries, spare power banks, and e-cigarettes are prohibited in checked storage holds. Televisions and desktop monitors checked into the hold carry no airline transit liability and require a signed release form at check-in.

Carrier Liability & Seasonal Limits

Mainline domestic liability is capped at $3,800 USD under DOT rules. Standard luggage over 115 linear inches or 100 lbs (45 kg) cannot be checked at passenger counters and must route through American Airlines Cargo. Regional American Eagle flights (operated by Envoy, Piedmont, or PSA) enforce smaller cargo hold door clearances, limiting rigid sports cases over 80 inches and restricting checked bags to 2 per customer.
